The aubergine is native to India. It has been cultivated in Southern and Eastern Asia since prehistory, but appears to have become known to the western world no earlier than the 15th Century.

The aubergine is a plant of the family known as nightshades. As a nightshade, it is closely related to the tomato and potato.

Aubergine is also the name of the purple colour resembling that of the vegetable.
